Leopard geckos are calm, hardy lizards and a popular first reptile. Get the set-up running and stable before your gecko comes home, and use this checklist to make sure nothing is missed.

The checklist
- Vivarium: a secure, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of floor space, since leopard geckos live on the ground.
- Heat gradient: a warm end and a cooler end, controlled by a thermostat, with thermometers at each end so you can check it.
- Lighting: leopard geckos are most active at dawn and dusk. Many keepers use a low-output UVB kit designed for shade-dwelling species, with a day and night cycle.
- Hides: at least a warm hide, a cool hide and a humid hide for shedding.
- Food: leopard geckos eat live insects, so plan for a regular supply of livefood.
- Supplements: dust insects with a calcium and vitamin powder as directed on the pack.
- Water: a shallow water bowl, refreshed daily.
