Budgies are bright, playful and one of the most popular first birds in the UK. With the right cage, food and a little attention every day, they're easy and rewarding to keep.

Cage set-up
Choose the largest cage you have room for, with horizontal bars for climbing. Add perches of different thicknesses, separate food and water pots, and place the cage in a bright room away from draughts, kitchens and direct sun.
What to feed
A good budgie seed mix is the base, topped up with small amounts of fresh veg and greens. Treats such as seed bells and honey bars are best kept occasional. Fresh water every day is essential.

Toys and company
Budgies are flock birds and get bored easily. Swings, ladders, mirrors and chew toys keep them busy; rotate toys weekly so they stay interesting. Many owners keep budgies in pairs.
Daily routine
- Fresh seed and water, and blow husks off the seed bowl.
- Time out of the cage in a safe, closed room if your bird is tame.
- Weekly: clean perches and cage floor.
