Bonfire Night and New Year can be frightening for dogs, cats and small pets. A little preparation in the weeks before makes a real difference.

Start early
Plug-in pheromone diffusers are usually best started a week or two before fireworks season, as the instructions advise. If your pet is very anxious, speak to your vet well in advance about other options.
Make a safe den
Set up a quiet, cosy hiding spot with a familiar bed and blankets. A calming bed or cushion can help. Let your pet choose to hide and don't force them out.

On the night
- Walk dogs in daylight, before fireworks start.
- Keep cats indoors with a litter tray, and shut cat flaps.
- Close curtains, and put on the TV or music to mask bangs.
- Stay calm and behave normally. Comfort is fine if your pet seeks it.
- Make sure your pet is microchipped with up-to-date details, in case they bolt.
- Rabbits and guinea pigs kept outside: cover part of the hutch and give extra bedding to burrow in, or bring them into a quiet shed or garage.
