Rabbits are intelligent, social animals that can live for many years. They need much more than a hutch in the garden, so here's a practical checklist for happy, healthy rabbits.

Housing: hutch plus run
Rabbits need space to hop, stretch up and run, so pair a sheltered, weatherproof hutch with a secure run they can use every day. Indoor rabbits need a safe, rabbit-proofed area too.
Hay is the main meal
Hay should make up the bulk of a rabbit's diet and be available at all times. It keeps teeth and digestion healthy. Add a measured portion of rabbit nuggets and some fresh greens.

Company
Rabbits are usually happier with another rabbit. Ask your vet about neutering, which helps pairs get along.
Weekly health check
- Eating and producing droppings normally (a rabbit that stops eating needs a vet promptly).
- Teeth, eyes, ears and nails.
- Clean fur around the bottom, especially in warm weather.
- Ask your vet about vaccinations.
