A tropical aquarium is a relaxing, colourful addition to any home. The secret to success is patience: set the tank up properly and let it mature before adding fish.

1. Tank, filter and heater
Choose a tank on a level, sturdy stand away from direct sunlight and radiators. You'll need a filter sized for the tank and an aquarium heater to keep the water at a stable tropical temperature, plus a thermometer to check it.
2. Substrate, décor and plants
Rinse gravel or substrate before adding it, then add rocks, wood and plants to give fish places to hide.
3. Treat the water
Tap water contains chlorine and chloramine that harm fish, so always use a water conditioner when filling and topping up.

4. Cycle before stocking
A new filter needs time to build up beneficial bacteria that break down fish waste. Run the tank for several weeks, test the water and add fish gradually, a few at a time.
5. Feeding
Feed small amounts that are eaten within a couple of minutes. Overfeeding is one of the most common causes of poor water quality.
